No Escape! Astro’s Playroom Guide

This was usually done via Sony’s proprietary PSSR technique (which stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). It also supports customizeable controller profiles that can be selected via one of the two Fn switches below the analog sticks. Four profiles can be loaded onto the controller itself, letting them be taken to other PS5 systems. This also allows the currently-selected profile to be used on other platforms, such as a PC. This makes for a themed series of levels (four levels per land) that showcase the DualSense controller, primarily its rumble feature. You’ll feel the ice shattering beneath Astro’s feet via the controller. For instance, in one area, Astro is atop a floating ice chunk attached to a pinwheel. The game’s also loaded with hidden items, which will appeal to players who like to collect trophies or find more to do once they finish a level.

Protagonist Cole McGrath has electric superpowers one of which is the induction Grind that lets him accelerate along metal cables. Very early into the Electrocloud level, you’ll spot a jet fighter flying about on the right-hand side of the level. This is the R-C01 from the cover of Air Combat, the first game in the Ace Combat series released on the PS1 in 1995 and developed by Namco.

Cooling Springs is the third zone in Astro’s Playroom, whose Artefacts come from the PlayStation 3 era from 2006 to 2013. win79 ‘s coloured blue after the Cross button, more commonly referred to as the X button. This zone’s suit is the Frog Suit, again controlled with the Adaptive Triggers and the SIXAXIS. Memory Meadow is chronologically the first zone in the game, with Artefacts covering the original PlayStation era from 1995 to 2000. The suit in this zone is the Baseball Suit, which you can move around by swiping on the Touch Pad. Astro’s Playroom was announced on June 11, 2020, at the PlayStation 5 reveal event.[5] The game was released on November 12, 2020 to generally favorable reviews from critics.

In the game, the player teams up with Captain Astro and goes on a quest to rescue his lost crew scattered across different worlds. The closest parallel to Astro’s Playroom that I can think of is Wii Sports. Both are games that were explicitly designed to showcase a new controller. But both also transcend that goal, shifting from tech demo to straight-up fun game. It takes only a few moments for Astro’s Playroom to show why you’ll want to play with a DualSense, and over the course of its run time it keeps giving you new reasons. In ASTRO’S PLAYROOM, players guide Astro through a series of lands, all of which tout the selling points of the PlayStation 5, including its SSD hard drive and new processor.

Once you’re on the other side, tug the Wires on the wall to reveal the next sequence with moving blocks. Jump onto the left-hand one, right it up, then Beam Glide to the block on the right. I can’t say I had very high expectations for Astro’s Playroom, a game that comes free with every PlayStation 5 console. I figured it might be a cute series of minigames, akin to the robot-themed minigames in the PlayStation 4’s pack-in title, The Playroom. That PS4 game was the sort of thing you boot up once, mess around with for 30 minutes, and then forget it exists. It’s a phenomenal thing, taken even further with adaptive triggers that provide meaningful, forceful feedback.

Find release dates and scores for every major upcoming and recent video game release for all platforms, updated several times per week. The song “I Am Astro Bot [Playroom Remix],” which repeats the title and plays on the opening menu, is enough to make it a catchy earworm. While it’s not the game’s fault, it makes every exclusive PS5 game feel like it lacks DualSense exclusivity.

Astro and his crew lead you on a magical introduction through PS5 in this fun platformer that comes pre-loaded on PS5. Each area showcases innovative gameplay that taps into the new features of the PS5’s DualSense wireless controller. Start by completing the story‚ then backtrack to collect all puzzle pieces and artifacts. Use DualSense features for precise controls and check collectible lists to ensure nothing’s missed. Hidden Achievements in Astro Playroom are secret trophies that require specific actions or discoveries.

Similar feelings are conveyed when you walk on ice, have water droplets falling on you, and other things that I won’t spoil. These feelings that I got from this controller are hard to describe in text but when you actually feel it for yourself, you’ll see just how much of a game changer the DualSense controller can be. It really makes me hope that as many developers as possible use the feature set inside this controller in their games. I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type II, meaning when it comes to gaming, I struggle with dexterity, strength, and mobility. The very opening of this game before even accessing a menu guides you through the controller, including the need to forcefully push down both triggers simultaneously.

It’s a wonderful celebration of PlayStation’s history but the absolute best moment is the final boss battle which is so perfectly handled we almost died of nostalgia playing it. Past games are also celebrated in fine style thanks to the little skits that are always going on in the background, often involving other bots playing the role of famous game characters. You also find a monkey suit for climbing and a fun nod to Marble Madness that must have been suggested by, or intended as homage to, PlayStation 5 architect Mark Cerny who created the original game.

First, progress through the level until you get to the controller cable tight-rope walk to the first Checkpoint, which you’ll do after crossing an island with strong winds. You don’t have to actually cross the tight-rope, but you do need to extend it since you can’t do that whilst carrying something.
